    Description

    (2)
STRANDS OF BIG AFRICAN SAND-CAST TRADE BEADS.
    These are
    not
    ancient
artifacts. They are sand-cast glass trade beads from Ghana, Africa, and run about 1/2" in diameter and a little over 1/2" in length (10 - 113mm).
This type of bead has been made in Ghana since the 1600s. They are made of pulverized glass of different colors strung on cassava stems and placed in a furnace. As the glass melts or congeals, the stems burn out, and colorful beads with holes are created. I don't know the exact age of these beads, but I suspect some are newer and some are from the 1900's.
The strands are 28" long with 23" of beads.
They are strung on Raffia, a cord or "string" made of
    palm leaf fibers
    .
    Remembe

(I offer 1-day shipping as a matter of course, and often ship the same day payment is received. I figure once you've paid for an item, you own it, and might as well have it as soon as possible.) They are wonderful for displays, crafts and collections, and very attractive to wear.
