Vintage Large Giraffe Handle Hand Carved African Walking Stick. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
As a child I had a fascination with African art.  My father lived near a small African import shop and anytime I would visit him I would insist on going to the store.
I was young but the store owner taught me something every time I went.  I could never afford to buy anything more than a bracelet or a CD of Mustafa Tetty Addy drumming but I loved the visits nonetheless.
I dreamed that one day I'd be able to own a few pieces like the ones I saw in that store in Chicago.
Well here I am today with my own little store and when I'm really lucky I come across some beautiful examples of African carvings like these.
In fact I can say with confidence that these walking sticks are far nicer than the ones in the shop all those years ago.
While still likely a tourist piece there is a big difference in quality.
The carving is more detailed and alive, the colors are more bold and painted with precise intention and the piece as a whole has a solid balanced feel.
These are not the dime a dozen walking sticks you find in most shops.  These are a little bit more special.
I was informed at the estate sale from where they came that they were purchased in the early 1990s in England of all places.
I love the figure of the giraffe with its head down as if it is peacefully drinking water.  Beneath the giraffe are two lions heads that look like the cross guard of the sword.
Down the middle of the stick is a twisted pattern of leopard spots, giraffe spots, and zebra stripes.
My pictures certainly can't do justice to the combination of black stain on a reddish brown wood making up a lovely, decorative piece of art.
At 36" long, this 1 lb 6 oz piece of solid carved wood is sure to make a beautiful addition to your African art collection.
